From September 18th to 27th, the Smart Mining Program conducted at the Graduate School of International Resource Science, Akita University.
This program is the last session of the Inter-University Exchange Project Smart Mining Program, its purpose being acquire practical programming related to the knowledge students learned from their class, “Basics of Mining Informatics” that was conducted online in the fall of their first year.
After a lecture by Associate Professor Toriya who is also a member of the executive committee of the Smart Mining Program, the students were divided into mixed teams of Japanese and Africans, and tackled the assigned tasks related to smart mining.
On September 20th, they went to Oga City for a field trip. They visited an oil storage terminal to see a huge underground tank that was about 50 meters high and 90 meters in diameter, and learned about energy operations in Japan. They also visited Cape Nyudo and the Namahage Museum, giving them an opportunity to experience Akita's nature and culture.
On the final day, academics from Kyushu University and Hokkaido University, the cooperating universities for this program, gave lectures on natural resources, and each team made a presentation. Students who completed the entire curriculum were awarded certificates by Professor Adachi thereby graduating as the second batch students to complete this program.
