Tuition Fees and other Charges: Payments and Waivers

Tuition Fee Amounts and Payment Methods (Accounting and Supplies Division, Payments Section)

Tuition Fee Amounts for the 2014 Academic Year

¥535,800 per year (first semester: ¥267,900; second semester: ¥267,900)

Payment Methods

The tuition fee is paid in two equal installments: the first in the first semester and the second in the second semester.
* For those who have made an application for a tuition fee waiver, payment will be deferred until a decision has been announced.

(1)2014 Academic Year First Semester

If you did not pay the first installment of the tuition fee when completing the admission procedures, please make payment at a post office using the university’s designated payment handling slip, which you will find enclosed in the same pack as the documents for admission procedures. Payments can be made from April 1 until April 30.

(2)2014 Academic Year Second Semester and after (until Graduation)

When completing the admission procedures, please submit the Tuition Fee Bank Transfer Request Form or the Automatic Payment Request Form to the bank (head office/branch) or Japan Post Bank/post office specified by the university and complete the procedures to set up direct debit payments for the tuition fee. (Please inform the Accounting and Supplies Division, Payments Section in the event that you change your bank account)

The installment for the first semester will be debited from your account each year on April 26, and the installment for the second semester on October 26, so please ensure to have sufficient funds in your account prior to these days. The funds will be debited from your account on the following working day if either of these dates happens to fall on a Saturday, Sunday or National Holiday.

The deadline for payments each year is April 30 for the installment for the first semester and October 31 for the installment for the second semester. Failure to make payment by these dates will result in a demand for payment being issued against you or your guarantor.

Failure to make payment even after a second demand may result in expulsion from the university.

Policies for Handling Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are handled according to the following sections of Akita University Regulations. Please ensure to read them carefully.

The Handling of Tuition Fees
  • When studying abroad (University Regulations Article 61): Student must pay the tuition fee as normal while studying abroad.
  • When taking a leave of absence from the university (University Regulations Article 62): Students who take a leave of absence from the university are exempt from paying the tuition fee for the month that they are absent until the month prior to their return to the university. (There is no need to apply for a tuition fee waiver) In some cases, students will still need to pay the tuition fee. Please ask the relevant section for more information.
  • When returning to the university following a leave of absence (University Regulations Article 63): Students must pay the tuition fee for the remaining months of the semester from the month that they return to the university until the end of the semester.
  • When graduating from the university during the course of an academic year (University Regulations Article 64): Students must pay the tuition fee for each month up until the month that they are expected to graduate at the beginning of each semester.
  • When withdrawing from the university (University Regulations Article 65): Students who withdraw from the university during the course of the first semester or second semester must pay the tuition fee for the semester during which they withdraw from the university.
  • When transferring to another university (University Regulations Article 65): Students who transfer to another university during the course of the first semester or second semester must pay the tuition fee for the semester during which they transfer to another university.
  • When suspended from the university (University Regulations Article 65): Students who are suspended from the university must also pay the tuition fee for the period of their suspension.
  • When paying the first semester installment and the second semester installment of the tuition fee as a single lump payment (University Regulations Article 68): Tuition fees that have already been paid are not eligible for reimbursement. However, students who withdraw from the university before the period in which the second semester installment of the tuition fee is due to be levied will be reimbursed an amount equivalent to the second semester installment of the tuition fee if the university receives a request for a reimbursement from the person paying the tuition fee.

(Student Support Division, Student Services Section)

Eligibility

  1. Those who are having trouble paying the tuition fee due to financial reasons and are deemed to have an outstanding academic record. Note that this excludes those who have been subjected to disciplinary action under the University Regulations.
  2. Those who are deemed to be having significant trouble in paying the tuition fee as a result of the main person covering the university expenses (hereafter, ‘benefactor’) of the applying student (hereafter, ‘applicant’) having passed away within the 6 months prior to the date of payment of the tuition fee (in cases where exemption from payment of an installment of the tuition fee falls on the day of enrolment, within 1 year prior to enrolment), or as a result of the applicant or benefactor having been affected by a natural disaster of some kind, such as storm and flood damage.
  3. Those who are deemed to be having significant trouble in paying the tuition fee as a result of the main person covering the university expenses (hereafter, ‘benefactor’) of the applying student (hereafter, ‘applicant’) having passed away as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, or the benefactor having been affected by this disaster.

Note: Those who are obliged to pay the tuition fee for the semester prior to application (excluding those who have been granted a full waiver) are not eligible to apply for a waiver until this payment has been completed, even if they are eligible to apply.

How to Apply

Tuition fee waivers are administered separately for the first semester and second semester based on the student’s application. Students who apply for a waiver in the first semester must reapply for a waiver in the second semester.

Students who wish to apply for a tuition fee waiver should submit the application documents to the Student Support Center after having carefully read the application guidelines handed out during the tuition fee waiver orientation (scheduled to be held at the end of January for the first semester and the middle of June for the second semester). Details will be provided here, on a.net and on noticeboards throughout the university.

Note that students who have to repeat a year cannot apply for a tuition fee waiver within that academic year. (However, applications can still be made if students have a special reason, such as illness or a study abroad program)

Furthermore, students who have exceeded the term of study for their course or who have been subjected to disciplinary action under the University Regulations are also ineligible to apply for a tuition fee waiver.

Decisions

Students who fall within the criteria for both income level and academic ability will be granted a tuition fee exemption for the applied for semester amounting to the full amount, half the amount or 1/3 of the amount. (Note that budgetary considerations mean that applications will not necessarily result in the granting of a tuition fee waiver)

Selection decisions will be announced through the personal portal site a.net (scheduled to be made in the middle of June for the first semester and the middle of November for the second semester), so please pay the tuition fee until then.
